Think about it... how can you have 3 equal parts of an object? The decimate representation is impossible and one side always has to be bigger then the other. This is also why there is no such thing as 360 equal degrees in a circle as one degree has to be off by a little bit... There are no 360 numbers that will add up to 1 whole object either.

Note that [0,1) doesn't include .999..., since an open set requires that you be able to move closer no matter how close you get and, even if .999... and 1 were different numbers, there could be no numbers between them.

An open set by definition has no single 'last number' - that is a closed set. [0,1). If you pick any positive number x less than 1, it will be in that set, and there will be infinitely many numbers y s.t. x < y < 1. This is what it means for a set (in this case, the reals) to be dense.
To tie this back to the topic, 1 is by definition the smallest number greater than all numbers in the set [0,1). Therefore, any number that is greater than all numbers in that set must be >= 1. .999... is obviously not greater than 1, so it is equal. QED. Stop being religiously devoted to your position and just let go for a sec. No one is going to think less of you for slowing down and re-examining your ideas.
