Memes are popular because they're supposed to be funny, and people think "hey, I can be funny without taking a risk!" even though humor and telling jokes is all about taking risks.
If comedians adopted the meme ideology, they'd all tell prewritten jokes other comedians wrote, and never make up any new ones. And if they got any flack for the other peoples' jokes they told, they can always go with the whole "well I wasn't the one who wrote that shitty joke" cop-out.
Internet memes are safe, unfunny jokes. People like the safety. People these days have hundreds upon hundreds of "friends" on social media sites, and if you post one of these stupid internet memes, at least one person out of hundreds is bound to find it amusing or at least tolerable enough to click the like button.
People like strength in numbers these days. Social media and internet memes encourage pack animal mentality.
