They should already be... look up ERMSB, it's available on current CPUs. Nothing can beat the speed of hardware operations, and the x86 ISA is just full of optimisation opportunities for HW designers and you can bet Intel is still discovering and implementing more of them with each new microarchitecture. All the "complex instruction" the RISCfags left out (like INTEGER DIVISION) now come back to haunt them.
