How should I learn coding to make a living?

Name: Anonymous 2013-10-31 21:18

What book(s) should I get to teach myself enough programming to make a living out of it?

I've taken a couple classes in Java, and I'm in a C++ one now for community college. And I've realized this semester I'm going to to have learned stuff that I could have taught myself in a few weeks at the most.

I still don't know what languages specifically I should focus on, and I'd like to learn web development beyond xhtml and simple javascript. Mostly, how to actually have a site be accessible to everyone on the internet.

I'd like to have the knowledge needed to be a freelance programmer.

You can't make a decent living off freelance programming. Become a sysadmin.

Maybe, maybe not, but advice for what to learn for well rounded programming would be appreciated.

Read SICP, then read K&R, then study C++, then force yourself to learn Java, C#, VB.NET. Reward yourself by learning Perl and Python (and Lua if you like).

If you want to get into web dev then study the ins and outs of the .NET framework, MySQL, Javascript, CCS3, HTML5 and Flash.

Look at job postings for what kind of qualifications they want you to have. Some of the skills they ask for are not useful so you can just lie and say you know it.
