Using Emacs for '(lisp) programming

I'm trying to get into Emacs for '(lisp) programming because SlimV is annoying to set up. However, I am more of a Vi man myself, so using Ctrl and Meta for everything feels very awkward and uncomfortable.

How does /anus/ use their Emacs?
