Back in the old days yes, but now must of the content you visit a google is cached, so no. Mirror servers, now that is another matter.

What would stop Google from taking over the Internet?
For example, Google may replace each populat site one-by-one with their own alternatives or force you move your site into their cloud hosting (just because it is already there).

The web existed before Google did. Web hosting existed before Google Cloud. I only use Google to find things that I didn't know before. If you go to /g/ and ask a question, people will normally link directly to a web page rather than a Google query.
