What sort of things would I have to learn in order to write a program that would dodge bullets in Touhou?

Name: Anonymous 2013-04-09 18:10

Why would you do that?
Why not spend your time making something actually useful?

Something useful huh? You mean like a random BBCODE generator?

You mean like the A* search algorithm?

do you want to cheat on some on-line competition?

No, just for fun. It would be obvious a computer was dodging because no humans dodge like computers.

Forget about it OP, if you can't even analyse the problem there's no way you'll ever write the code for it.

But he wants you to write it. He's an ``idea guy''. You all know what kind of person I'm talking about.

I hate people like that.

I forgot to say you'd have to learn to program.
You'll need a way of knowing where the bullets are on the screen (could use hooks into the program or somehow record the screen state).
The former would involve cracking/hacking to find the memory addresses that have the data you want. The latter would be similar to OCR except you're just recognising the bullets and powerups.
You'd also need to record the character position, and boss position so you actually kill them.
You'd need your character ``AI'' to either find a path or to just dodge bullets in its immediate surroundings.

I don't think he does, he just wants help on how to do it.
The problem is that he's essentially asking ``how do I do this because I have no idea whatsoever''.
It's like asking how to make a steel medieval European sword when you don't have a forge, and you haven't even forged a nail.
I guess there's nothing wrong with asking the question, but the question is almost ``how do I program''.
Which in that case then OP should do programming courses on edX or coursera, or perhaps the original MIT 6.001 course on MIT opencourseware. There was some guy who did the MIT computer science course in a year, look up ``MIT challenge''.

I share your sentiment about idea guys though. There's plenty in the games industry that's for sure- and everyone only sees the success stories like fatfuck Notch, so they all think success is as easy as having an idea and then coding it.

Oh and there's also the corporate ``idea guys''

``It's like facebook, but on the cloud!''
``Basically I thought, what do people want? And they want Twitter for pets.''

And then they say that you'll get some shitty pay or X percent of it if it takes off. Speculative pay in other words. It's like gambling but you have to do work and the returns are shitty.
And they wonder why nobody will program for them...

Notch is actually a programmer with a decent education. People don't quite comprehend the education, effort and skill required to do any system that isn't trivial.

And he didn't succeed with his first attempts either.
