THE Unshelved BOOK CLUB PRESENTS

JOEL on Software

BY JOEL SPOLSKY

Customer : "I want to be a software millionaire."

Dewey : "Read "Joel on Software".

Joel Spolsky has worked at a lot of software companies, big and samll, good and bad.

Now he has his own, and he blogs about software and the software business.

Joel was an Israeli paratrooper. He doesn't suffer fools -or foolishness - gladly.

He's smart, funny, and has uncommon amounts of common sense."

Customer : "I don't want to program computers."

Dewey : "No Problems. It's about more than programming.

Like why everyone should have their own office.

How to interview.

Why you shouldn't offer incentives for good work.

And why he'd rather work at Ben & Jerry's than Amazon.com."

Customer : "I don't want to have to learn anything or do any work. I just want to be rich."

Dewey : "You can buy lottery tickets at the corner news stand."

JoS is good coffee reading. From the hip advice from a fairly lucid writer (at least relative to the rest of the software engineering part of the blogosphere). Still, if you tried to run a company on Spolsky advice you'd be up shit creek before long.

Yep! We all need to learn from Spolsky on the art of bullshit writing.
