Perl is useful and only looks ugly when the person writing the code makes it look that way. Contrary to languages like Ruby, Lisp, etc., which force you to do things in specific ways, Perl allows you to use to come up with many different solutions and pick the one that looks the best.
Also, there is no language with better reg ex handling.
