amphetamine (Adderall), modafinil (Provigil), ephedrine, pseudoephedrine (Sudafed), phenmetrazine, cathinone, methamphetamine

Stimulants work. If you want to abuse them long term, take an NMDA receptor antagonist (e.g., nitrous oxide or memantine) to block tolerance and aspirin to avoid heart attacks.

Permanent psychosis hasn't been known to happen except in cases of hardcore meth addicts, but even they typically recover to complete sanity. It's acid (LSD) that has the potential to permanently fuck your brain without killing you.

There was propaganda in the 90s about MDMA causing long-term depression (depleting your serotonin receptors). There is absolutely no evidence that MDMA is toxic to nerve cells. The MDMA comedown is depressive, but this is of course only temporary. It isn't the kind of drug anyone would take multiple times a day or even everyday, so any experiments that give rats a shitload of injections are not relevant to human drug users. Moderate MDMA usage is overall more anti-depressive than depressive. If the safety of non-recreational drugs were taken with the same apprehension and scrutiny, Tylenol would have a skull and crossbones on it.
