I've read somewhere that strings on the Lisp machine were made up of characters that had font face, size, color, and style built in. Why don't ``modern'' computers (aka shit PC clones) do that?

Clipboards already preserve formatting nowadays and it's a pain in the ass. I can't think of any context in which I'd want that.
