Lisp Machine characters

I've read somewhere that strings on the Lisp machine were made up of characters that had font face, size, color, and style built in. Why don't ``modern'' computers (aka shit PC clones) do that?

Because that's an awful idea.

And onto that, it's bloated and it's something applications should do, not the OS

Clipboards already preserve formatting nowadays and it's a pain in the ass. I can't think of any context in which I'd want that.
