Last time I checked, nobody has bothered writing a comprehensive set of hardware drivers in any Lisp when it's normally been done in the quintessential systems language, C.

The only open source software project that includes a ``comprehensive set of hardware drivers'' is the Linux kernel (okay, and FreeBSD, although they're sharing a lot of driver code).  Unless you want to directly import code from there (and have to abide by both the technical and legal restrictions), you're writing shit from scratch, so you might as well pick the language you want too.
