I've considered this a lot before, and my conclusion was that (barring life or health threats) it's a risk worth taking. Suppose that I have interacted with one hundred people of a particular class, and each and every one of them has oppressed me. None of them have shown any mercy, remorse, or even an acknowledgement of what they've done. I am just about to interact with a complete stranger who is of that class. My brain, working by association, musters up all sorts of negative memories and feelings. What is the right thing to do? Lash out at a stranger who has done me no wrong (but who is statistically very likely to, from my point of view), or expose myself to being hurt once more? Logic dictates the latter, for I would be perpetuating discrimination by performing the former.
