An interesting theory (and not too far-fetched) is that the universe is composed of information. This would mean the main reason life exists is because the universe is trying to keep the total amount of information at zero, and to do so it needs to create observers in order to increase/decrease information entropy without gaining/losing information. This goes beyond biological evolution, since evolution happens over time, while observer-information interaction happens
