Compiled programs run on more machines because not all machines have web browsers, and of the machines that do have web browsers, not all have Javascript enabled for your shitty site.

Also, no one "writes programs in Javascript." They just use it to script the interface and XHR with a server-side program written in a powerful language like Perl, Common Lisp, or C++.
