How to make money as a programmer
You can't, programmer is a blue-collar menial job that no white person wants to do, which is why all programmers are either indian, chinese, or russian. Being a low-paid slave in a white country may be a good outcome for them, but the only native whites I see programming are complete losers.

Most of the work you will find as a programmer will be custom-made software for a client. RMS seems to be okay with you doing this type of work, as long as the source code is freely available.
Just make some awesome software and sell it if you are so inclined. I just got done fixing up a website that sells digital software. Yeah, people buy that shit and dgaf about 'freedom'.

There's a lot of money in fixing open source shit that makes it into production-type of scenarios. Even as a loner you have a good chance competing against the support companies formed by the initial developers, because they're usually charging pretty hefty sums.
