Empty set

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 15:51

An empty set is a set that has no elements.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 15:55

An invisible unicorn is pink.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 15:57

An infinitely large set is a conceptual piece of data that can never exist in its entirety.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 16:00

What is "infinity"?

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 16:02

is there a set which has a cardinality between that of the natural numbers and that of the continuum?

Name: FFP 2012-09-25 16:07

Infinite is that which has no end.

I see the contradiction

There is no contradiction.

Confirmed for kike.

I'm no kike. But I can see infinity.

Sets are defined as collections of elements, not as nothings.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 16:23

An empty element is an element that is 0.

Sets are ,,defined" axiomatically.

Elements cannot be empty
>>14
The common definition is clearly lacking, that's the point of the thread.

Not a set anymore. The absence of anything is not a collection of elements.

Somebody step up and properly define ``Set'' and ``Empty set''.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 16:41

>>21
No. Just because you haven't finished your first year of CS.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 16:43

A set is a collection of distinct elements. An empty set is a set that contains all those elements that are different from themselves.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 16:45

"set" is jewish buzzword, just like "collection", "infinity" and "god".

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 17:07

>>21
Go troll someone else, the empty set has always been a set. It's guaranteed by the empty set axiom, which is a part of the canonical set theory.

>>15
I've heard this before, but don't understand. What about the empty string?

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 17:11

>>15,25
The empty element is the only element in the empty set.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 17:14

>>26
That's not true. The empty string is not in fact a part of the empty set, as it has a value (empty).

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 17:15

>>15,25
Also, an empty element could be another empty set, i.e. {{}}

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 17:16

what use is transfinite set theory?

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 17:17

>>27
You misunderstood. An empty string is not the empty element. The empty element is the element defined by the very lack of an element.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 17:59

empty set = { x | x is a good female programmer }

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 18:02

>>31
Can't see your "empty set".

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 18:03

An empty set is a like an empty box of goods.

The box is there, and it doesn't have anything inside, but it's there. You can't say "there are no goods so the box disappeared".

On the other hand, you can't have an infinite set, leave that to the Jews.

Name: Anonymous 2012-09-25 18:05

i already defined the empty set. see >>31
