Gary Gygax
When I turned 13, the theme of my Bar Mitzvah was Dungeons and Dragons. Not expecting much, I invited Mr. E. Gary Gygax to my Bar Mitzvah.
To my great surprise and delight, not only did I receive a response, but Mr. Gygax personally wrote his regrets and sent me a check for $18.00 (in Jewish tradition, 18 is a lucky number).
I was always torn between bewildered gratitude and guilt. I have always wondered if maybe Mr. Gygax thought that I was some distant, forgotten relative he had some kind of obligation to send something to, or whether he sent me a gift knowing I was "just a fan."
