1) appeal to orthodox hags (about 50% of population) and insecure teenagers from nationalistic/religious gangs which also grew in size lately,
2) make a case where people were criminally charged and seemingly punished for discuption of church service, making attacks on ``russian orthodox church / moscow patriarchate'' dangerous.
All of that is
designed to propel russia deeper into middle ages from which it barely crawled for a brief moment in XIX century. State prosecutor was using documents from a greek church council that happened about 1000 years ago in Greece as proof of Pussy Riot's guilt. I'm not shitting you.
All of that is very sad, and whoever sane still remaining in russia needs to get the fuck out as soon as possible.
