And retards say you cant do color cycling with true color images. But why cant we use palettes for each channel?

Pro-tip: You can. Program it. Stop limiting yourself to the narrow confined box of 256-color palettes defined by off-the-shelf image file formats. Modern GPUs support arbitrary textures/image formats, and with the right fragment/pixel shader code, you can get full hardware support for images with 32-bit or even 64-bit indices.

Color palettes are just a form of indirection using an array lookup. That's all.
