Sensical GNU System Shell Scripting?

What do you use and why is it better than everything else?

I just know Bash. I hate the syntax and it's apparently pretty slow in benchmarks too. I tried using Python with those shell utilities but that was an even more horrendous experience. Is there nothing better?
