They're doing it to make money. There's no conspiracy; they just do what any money making patent trolling entity would and patent everything, whether it exists or not. The brilliant thing about patent law is that they're written in sub-points. For you to infringe on the patent you just need to do sorta the same thing as one sub-point, but in order to do a prior art suit you need to prove that every single sub-point existed exactly as described before the patent was filed.
