The gender "man" derives from Middle English "mann," possibly inherited from something in Germanic or Gallic, and its oldest useage was collective, gender-neutral. There is also
manav in Sanskrit which is said to come from the name of the first human in Hinduism - Manu. Of the latter two, popular belief suggests one may have inspired the other.
