Making new friends VS "Networking"

What's the difference between making new friends and networking?

Ever since I became an ``adult'' I've been told to focus on networking with people in order to ensure that I'll always have a job. I've been taught to envy and mimic people who have great ''networking skills``.

Why does it have to be this way? Are other people merely tools that I have to use to make sure I have food on the table and roof over my head? What ever happened to just making new friends?

I just accepted this, but now I feel sad :( I have 200 or so friends on facebook, while I, in reality, have zero friends.

I am only networking or working or sleeping. I never go out.
