Making new friends VS "Networking"

What's the difference between making new friends and networking?

Ever since I became an ``adult'' I've been told to focus on networking with people in order to ensure that I'll always have a job. I've been taught to envy and mimic people who have great ''networking skills``.

Why does it have to be this way? Are other people merely tools that I have to use to make sure I have food on the table and roof over my head? What ever happened to just making new friends?

The best way to network is to make friends, but some people are unable to do that.
