Why do major sites have such ugly code?

Don't these guys realize you can put all the CSS and JS in separate files?

Does google know what whitespace is?

Google puts their code through a compressor that renames variables to their smallest possible size, removes unnecessary whitespace and so on, in order to compress the document without using any special protocols.

It's like as if someone who is exactly like me works at google.
