BIOS is outdated 16-bit crap, but UEFI is not the answer. EFI/UEFI was part of Intel's DRM plans for years. There are completely free cross-platform firmwares like coreboot, PMON and OpenFirmware (IEEE-1275 Standard) that will not lock down your computer.
