catch an scp error?

When scp tries to overwrite an existing file (without group write) I get permission denied, otherwise it sends it or rewrites it.


$ scp Test.zip linus@penisland.net:/path/to/dicks/Test.zip
linus@penisland.net's password:
scp: /path/to/dicks/Test.zip: Permission denied

How do I catch that permission denied error (no group write) so my script can try sending it again with a different name?

Would it be easier to detect the permissions ahead of time and sudo chmod accordingly?

The scp'd file's permissions are preserved. When I $touch the permissions are -rw-rw-r--.

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-372 is to be contained in its cell, a 5 m x 5 m x 5 m airtight steel cube resembling a gas chamber, at all times.  Weekly checks for any cracks or holes are mandatory.  The cell should also be vacuum-cleaned daily to make sure there are no runaway threads lying around to which he can post his anti-jew rants.

Description: SCP-372 is a humanoid creature measuring approximately 1.58 meters in height.  Arms are grossly out of proportion with the rest of the subject's body, with an approximate length of 1.5 meters each.  Skin is mostly devoid of pigmentation, with no sign of any body hair.  SCP-372 has unusually large nose and fleshy lips.

Subject shows very little compassion towards jewish persons or anyone with a slightest amount of jew ancestry in their DNA and will often attack personnel matching the above description with his anti-jew rants denouncing their contributions as unscientific and ultimately harmful.

SCP-372 may sporadically escape his cell through one of its walls (he seems to prefer the eastern one) and wander around the facility in search for a working terminal with an Internet connection.  Upon finding one he will proceed to post his anti-jew rants to a number of computer programming forums.  While thus occupied, he may react violently.  However, after posting a few messages he will seemingly fall asleep, and may be retrieved and placed back into his cell.

SCP-372 poses no actual danger to jewish persons or otherwise.
