Why there are there no open-source projects to replicate this?
It would
1. solve the "artists problem" in every video game, making everything hyper-realistic without any art.
2. bankrupt the entire greedy industry selling 3-d models, packs, plugins and apps.
3. virtual realities, games, avatar generators powered by fractals would be infinitely scalable:
only the fractal parameters need to transmitted. Games would not need to store gigabytes of textures and 3-d meshes.

Vue renders are very slow. Games cannot generates such stuff in real-time, vue takes many hours even for simple scenery.

The video game "Fuel" already does generate its own environment on the fly, rather than storing 3D models: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_(2009_video_game)

At 5,560 square miles it's truly impressive. I own it for the Xbox 360, unfortunately the technology is better than the game.

It took me 30 minutes to drive across 1/16 of the map.
