Greetings /prog/,

2012 has started, and I'm pleased to see such enthusiasm with regards to our resolutions. I especially enjoyed reading about how much of /prog/ wants to come together to collaborate on a bigger project. Without an epic idea to start with, one can only achieve mediocrity (at best). So let us dream big.

But also, let's make sure we do not repeat the mistakes of the past. The last time we tried something like that it was called Anonix, and this project died a slow death. As /prog/'s official community manager, it is my job to ensure we do not go down that route again. Since some of you are new here, I will attempt to briefly summarize what went wrong with Anonix:

* unrealistic objectives
* limited usefulness
* no fun factor
* last but certainly not least: no repository

As you can see none of these problems are fundamentally unsolvable. And in fact, most have already been solved since we're not writing an OS. ITT we try to tackle the last one.

What /prog/ needs first, IMO, is a communal repository. A place where we can share all of our /prog/ scrapers, userscripts, games, challenges etc... I'm sure there are people here who have server space to make this a possibility, and I'm sure there are other people here who have the technical know-how to make this a reality. I am calling on those people to step forward and get in contact with each other.

The idea that Cudder is the only one who contributes to /prog/
is ludicrous. /prog/ is the work of many, of us all.

In fact, I think a case could be made against his usage of this
forum. I'm not entirely convinced that it is a healthy thing to
do: to make a name for one's self as he and others like him are
doing (FrozenVoid springs to mind, of course there are more).

Signing one's opinions is common practice in the real world, but
when you get down to it there really isn't much of a reason to do
it here online. In my opinion it even has several distinct dis-
advantages (I'll leave it to you to figure out what those are).

Tell me, Cudder, why do you bother to fill out the name field?
What is it that makes the extra effort of brute-forcing for a cool
tripcode worth it?

Agreed. I'd sum that there ain't no reason to do that in the real world, too. The best it can offer is more folklore for the argument of authority to be abused. Names and monikers are for narcissistic wimps which want credit and personal renown, not as consequence of merit but the other way around: fame is the goal, and (possibly) good and interesting actions are just a mean.

Anonimity is what the Internet is all about. Anonimity is the future. There shall be a day where people will do things because these things are actually meaningful, instead of doing them simply because this would bring them fame and reputation -- even if a good thing is done as a consequence.
