Binary prefixes

Name: Anonymous 2011-12-28 17:11

All major international standards bodies agree that kB, MB and GB refer to 10^3 bytes, 10^6 bytes and 10^9 bytes respectively, while KiB, MiB and GiB refer to 2^10 bytes, 2^20 bytes and 2^30 bytes respectively [0]. BIPM has a specific notice on its section [1] regarding unit prefixes, stating that "These SI prefixes refer strictly to powers of 10. They should not be used to indicate powers of 2". NIST has published a page defining the standard binary prefixes [2]. Also, ISO and IEC, as well as IEEE, all have finalised standards regarding the proper use of SI and binary prefixes [3].

I'd rather we redefined the kilogram to mean 1024 grams, kilometer to be 1024 meters, etc.
