Because it's a good language. So are C and Java.

The truth is that C/C++ is an ad hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of Lisp.

And the way GCC manages memory is a must see! Probably half of GCC's code deals with memory management, instead of using GC.
