how hard do you work when you work for the man (you are paid, but you don't own any rights to what you make, and if you were fired, you would never have access to your work again)
how hard do you work when you work for the general public (you are possibly paid? and you retain authorship to your work, and you will always have access to it, but you as a business person can't take advantage of your shit being closed source)
how hard do you work when you work for yourself (you are paid based upon how you sell your shit, you can do whatever you want with your shit, and maybe you employ other people to contribute to your shit and the other people claim no ownership over their contributions to your shit)
