because GCC has a reputation for being shit in comparison to enterprise proprietary c and seeples compilers written by a super secret team of expert programmers and ide designers that know more about expert compilation and class diagrams than silly non enterprise employees like ourselves could ever hope to know.

And also people can get lazy, and say, if it works, then it is good enough, and not bother with thorough optimization.
