Is there any way (in any language) to get a list of all the strings that would be matched by any given regular expression?

For example "[fm]aggot" would generate "faggot", "maggot"

Of course + and * would cause trouble, no need to support them. In fact I only really need []. I was hoping there's a better way than a nested for loop.
