Should I be bothered with m4? Is it useful for something? Can anyone show some cool use-cases of it?

m4 is the language used for autoconf and friends.

m4 is not well-loved, but it's strength is that it is available (i.e. typically present) on virtually any Unix system.

If you're choosing between macro processors to use, m4 is a good choice simply because it is so ubiquitous.

Aside from mentioning autoconf and perhaps sendmail, there's not much else to say about it. You're probably never going to write a config file for sendmail (I do not miss sendmail, and you should be using either postfix or exim instead), but you might do something with autoconf.
