Flash programming

Name: Anonymous 2011-11-07 6:47

Hi /prog/,

So basically I have a lot of spare time on my hands right now, and I feel I might as well use it to learn something.

I want to learn flash-programming, for a start. Anyone can recommend me any place to start, which program to use, and websites/books with decent advice?

tl;dr: Advice on starting to learn flash.

Um, you could try learning python.  The thing is that learning these things as I have found out by myself is really boring. I'm using the book "Learn Python the hardway" It is terribly boring so I just work through some exercises every day and promise myself not to quit.

What is the difference between python and flash?

One has a state of the art JIT engine, as opposed to a slow as fuck mediocre VM interpreter. The other forces you to indent your code. I wouldn't really recommend either.

Okay. What else shall I start learning then? I already know C+ and html.

Buy a $150 book that teaches Flash programming. If you're too cheap for that, read SICP then buy a $90 book on Actionscript.

What did you expect? Are you that much retarded? Have you asked in /b/ also? Or in one of the 25 variations of /japanesepedophila/ ?
Google something like "Actionscript reference books", read critics on AS community sites, on Amazon... It's not that hard. You wanted to be trolled, obviously.

Thanks for the link. Oh, I'd love to find a book, I just haven't found one, that seems professional enough.

>>10
No. I did check stores etc., but I thought that maybe someone on a board called /prog/ might know which book on programming is advised.

Actionscript is not popular here.
Read SICP (>>9's link) and then HtDP, TAoCP, EoPL, K&R, CLR, CLRs, CTM, AIMA, AMOP, ATTAPL, CLtL, GOF, HOP, LiSP, LL, PAIP, PCL, PLP, TAPL, TCPL, TCS, TLS, TSPL, TSS, TRS, and WELC. (it's kopipe and surely misses some)

Alternatively, if you're a beginner and just want to write your first flash game in an afternoon, try something like this tutorial for a space shooter: http://www.kongregate.com/labs

thx, but I'm not that interested in games. Thanks, nonetheless.

Then why flash, if I may ask?

Name: Anonymous 2011-11-07 9:41

Websites. I know it sounds queer, but some people have been specificly demanding the flash-element for their website.

It does sound queer and you don't want to have any business with these people.

adobe open sourced their actionscript vm awhile back (tamarin). also their flex sdk is open source.

OP, look up some actionscript tutorials. actionscript is the programming language used to make flash files. serious flash devs don't use the flash ide at all. they write actionscript code in their editor of choice and compile that into a swf. you can download the "flex sdk" for free from adobe and use that to compile actionscript.
