((((xsum >= 0) | 0) << 1) - 1) // 1 or -1
xsum * ((((xsum >= 0) | 0) << 1) - 1) // xsum or -xsumxsum. If it is negative, it evaluates to -xsum, which would be a positive number. That's a really ignorant way to do abs(xsum).
