...sure... but the only reason to write your own memory manager is performance, and the thing is, in the near future, performance is going to come from multi-core processing. And manually doing that is just too hard for humans if you're code is side-effect ridden and low-level. Being good at manual memory management in 2011 is like being good at making buggy whips in 1911.
