What does it bring to the table in terms of practicality? Compared to other languages, it doesn't seem to offer anything new.

It is acceptable to abbreviate words in such contexts. But then imagine a person who uses "programming" abbreviations in human speech, making a point to pronounce "create" as "creat", trying to sound "in the know". Doesn't the person you are imagining have a face all covered in pimples and, frankly, a below average intelligence?
