I just discovered there is such a thing as free shell accounts.

So /prog/ which provider should I sign up with?

shell.com obviously!

Name: !L33tUKZj5I 2011-09-07 13:48

I use cjb.shell.net.

Name: !L33tUKZj5I 2011-09-07 13:49

Hrm...looks like they only have a parking page now. Strange, I've been using them daily ever since rootshell.be went down.

Name: Anonymous 2011-09-07 14:09

I didn't know people still offered them, what with the abuse and all.

99% of people searching for free shell accounts aren't going to use them to ``learn *NIX'', but instead for nefarious purposes.[1]

They call the VPS'S's now.
But they are not free

If you want to ``learn *NIX'', that JavaScript VM should really be sufficient.

It's called shell.cjb.net. I use it too. They have BSD on amd64.

I strongly recommend blinkenshell, its run by this Swedish IT student. You have to hang around on their IRC channel, if they like you they will give you an account (you need 3 recommendations from members). You can use your account to maintain a 24hr IRC connection, for html site, email and most popular compilers are installed. You will learn a lot about Linux by talking to the people on their channel, its mostly IT students.

the best way to learn how to use Linux is through a remote shell because it forces you to use the console for everything and not fall back on the gui

everything as in litterally everything. you have no need for a graphical interface with Linux, you can do all your programming, web browsing, email, newsgroups, IRC from the console. either do a minimal ubuntu install where you have no x windows, or use a shell account

Why would you use a shell account for programming, web browsing, email, newsgroups, IRC? To learn how to use a shell account for programming, web browsing, email, newsgroups, IRC? Doesn't seem like a terribly sensible investment of effort to me.

when someone asks a question like that I immediately know they do not work in the IT industry nor study anything having to do with computers. So I have to wonder if its really worth the bother answering this question because these types of questions will just keep getting asked over and over by people who know nothing about computers who somehow think its silly and old fashioned that most all major systems administration tasks are still done on the command line

jesus fuck niggers, why won't you realize its 2011? there's a free tier that gives you your own root box for a year, no hanging around in faggot IRC channels required.

www.anapnea.net

Thank me later /prog/.

Anapnea 256mb disk space
* No BNC or eggdrop allowed.
* No torrenting allowed.
* One account per person.
* No setting up your own server/daemon/bot/proxy of any kind is allowed.
* No exploiting any network resources for illegal purposes is allowed.
* No running any pointlessly CPU-intensive binaries such as bruteforcers.
* No usage of your Anapnea account to harrass a third party is allowed.
* You are encouraged to not overuse network resources.
there much better hosts with less restrictions: http://shells.red-pill.eu/

What do people actually use shell accounts for? If setting up IRC and/or a VPN proxy is disallowed and you have very limited CPU and memory resources, what's the point?

thats actually the main use of a remote shell is to maintain a 24/7 connection for IRC logs, I dont see how that Anapnea server can exist with such a rule

If you sign up for Amazon EC2 you get one free micro instance. I use mine as a what.cd seedbox, so I sometimes go over my free traffic quota and end up paying like 7 cents, but if you don't do anything too intensive with it you can easily get away with paying nothing. Plus you can do anything with it. Hell, you can run your own free shell service with it.
