Open Watcom C/C++ compiler

Name: Anonymous 2011-07-23 12:15

I wonder if anyone here has used the Open Watcom C/C++ compiler?
It was a popular commercial C++ compiler that ran on DOS/Windows in the 90s, and now has been made open source.

I recommend clicking the link that says history, it has an interesting story behind it. You can download and install it on windows and compile on the console with:
cl filename.c  or  cl  filename.cpp

Id like to see it get ported to Linux

Great! A free C/C++ compiler for Linux. How long did I have to wait for this.

NASM uses it for OS/2 builds. Sometimes it fails because of lacking or broken support for parts of C99, but that's easy to work around.

If it's C++, it's worse than crap.

Watcom was the best x86 compiler circa 1995. There's no reason for it to exist anymore.

I take it you would rather use GCC and MSVCC?

Watcom is quite decent, the only problem is its buggy and not up to the newest criteria.
But its a very decent peace of software that should not be let to waste.
Consider that saying software is decent is quite much in this world.

I'd rather use Clang. Surprise, I am!

And yes, GCC and MSVC both surpassed Watcom during the decade between when it was EOL'd and the OpenWatcom project got their shit sorted out. I haven't followed the project for a very long time, but I would be very surprised if they managed to stay competitive. It's a niche compiler focused for outdated platforms.
