Mutable vs Inmutable

I'm learning perl and also a little of LUA.

LUA has inmutable strings and Perl mutable strings.

¿What are the advantages/disadvantages of mutability?

The advantage of a mutable string is that it's mutable.

The advantage of an immutable string is that it's immutable.
