drupal

soup /prog/, i just started on a job where i have to program drupal modules. what does /prog/ think about drupal? i'll start:

it's written in PHP, so not really efficient... but it doesn't really matter nowadays (we don't do super high profile heavy traffic websites). still, i detected some areas where lack of performance was hurting the bottom line.

still... the thought of PHP opening, reading and interpreting all those files every time a request is made (they don't use APC or anything AFAICT), plus those hundreds of SQL queries that are made for almost *every* aspect of the website... it gets to the point where, they have a problem with a cron job now... the cron job is a drupal module... i'm almost 100% certain it does a sql query every time a page is loaded to see if there are jobs that need to be done. it kind of makes me cringe, but i realize that hardware is super cheap nowadays so it really doesn't matter much, as long as developer time can be minimized.

drupal, as a piece of software, is simply awesomely easy to learn.. it has a very simple high level structure, and you can dig into whatever component you want to customize the shit out of it. you can find modules for everything. i'm extremely impressed.

ok so the obvious solution would be to implement drupal in haskell, i think i'll lobby for that?
