You know, just thinking about it, if either of these approaches - knowledge bases and pattern and relation seekers like >>3 suggested actually worked efficiently - worked, then why are we still having arguments like this?  You'd think one would show promise over the other when instead they both just look rather mediocre in general.

Don't get me wrong, you need knowledge base. The question is how it's filled, what structure it has and what initial content it should include.

bsically, megaHAL's knowledge base just've wrong structure, incapable of describing reality.
