Prime numbers

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-09 17:42

Does anyone else find the Sieve of Eratosthenes and the ilk a totally pointless concept?

It like over optimising a Java program that could be written in C in a short space of time.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-09 17:43

Then you wouldn't have algorithms to teach CS kids "this isn't how you solve problems".
Like linear search on sorted lists.

Nice.

Why primes are random?

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-09 18:00

Prime numbers = autism

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-09 18:41

The point is to obtain prime numbers, therefore it is not pointless.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-09 18:59

They're not random, they're completely deterministic actually.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-09 19:06

I think he meant the distribution

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-09 19:07

>>8
Their successive differences, is that deterministic?

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-09 21:17

>>10
Are you serious? It's a function on the primes. Of course it's deterministic. Hint: when then answer is computable it's unquestionably deterministic.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-09 21:40

>>9

The distribution of primes isn't random at all, it happens every time a natural number n > 1 is only divisible by n itself and 1.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 14:40

>>12
Distribution of primes != Law of primes

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 15:00

The universe is deterministic and objective, bitches.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 15:12

>>12
This isn't a valid argument because it assumes that there is an order to the distribution of prime numbers where no order has yet to be found.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 16:18

>>14
That has not been established. Luckily it is to broad to have anything do with the question at hand.

>>15
I don't think "deterministic" is the quality you're investigating here. Until you can express yourself better you're going to get nowhere.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 19:52

>>16
I was dissolving a premise to invalidate the argument. How did you not understand that?

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 19:53

>>15

You're unintelligent, obviously there is an order to the distribution of prime numbers, just keep reading >>12 over and over again until you see it.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 20:04

>>18
Unintelligent? I'm being scientific and ultimately productive. Show me a mathematical function that takes in positive integers and outputs the prime number at that position and then I'll believe you.

7/10.
Not bad, but not quite subtle enough with the Sussman reference. You prematurely outed yourself.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 20:30

>>20
fuck off

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 20:36

The numbers generated by increasing the precision of pi are computable and random in sequence.

Fuck this whole thread. It's like a fistful of assholes in here.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 20:46

>>17
You failed to do so with accuracy is the problem. Maybe I was wrong about you, perhaps you have nothing to say at all.

>>22
Your idea of random has nothing to say about determinism.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 21:13

>>23
WTF? You cannot determine the sequence of PI without 'observing' it. I'm so done with this thread.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 21:59

>>24
Have you tried computing it? Wikipedia has many formulas for doing so if you can't work it out for yourself.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 22:33

>>25
Computing it is just observing it, dipshit. And yes, I've computed Pi, as well as other irrational numbers.

f(x) = xth digit in pie.
Go figure that one out.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 23:01

>>26>>>f(4)
3>>>f(4)
9>>>f(4)

There you have it, a nondeterministic function.
Also, while you are speaking like a retard that doesn't know what words mean, hopefully on purpose, you should note that you can indeed do what you vaguely appear to be unintelligibly talking about, i.e. calculating the xth digit without first calculating the previous x - 1 digits, for π's binary representation.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-10 23:14

>>27
I was always under the impression that computers kept a static pre-calculated copy of pi somewhere, good to a decent level of precision.

Name: Anonymous 2011-03-11 0:12

>>27
Ahahahaha ok I'm gonna come clean with you. I'm dicking around with you a bit. But that being said, I don't know too much about math (other than what I've taught my self when I needed it). I like to make applets and grease monkey scripts here and there... But seriously, you seem to be getting a bit too worked up over this. I had no idea that Pi's xth digit could be calculated by itself, that's pretty cool. Maybe the world is deterministic. I don't know for sure, and I'm pretty sure you don't either. I chose to troll you a bit because you reminded me of a friend of mine who insists that 'god doesn't exist'. He just couldn't except that he didn't know the answer, so he just stuck to the one he was most comfortable with. He had no tolerance for uncertainty. I hope that you really do have valid proof that the world is deterministic, or else you are just another neurotic trying desperately to cope with having to live in a world you can't control.

Just letting you know, you aren't talking to just one person. I threw a few posts in there but most of them aren't me. Then again I'm not sure you are just one person.
