I actually wonder what will be more popular in the (far, or maybe not) future: (heavily) genetically engineered lifeforms (+ lots of augmentation for humans) or just a transition to less error-prone general AI's or both. The whole problem with biological lifeforms is that they eventually die due to both programmed death and all the damage the environment causes, however unlike other things, biological lifeforms do have plenty of (imperfect) regeneration and self-repair capabilities, but they lack the simplicity of backing up and restoring something perfectly, or near-perfect error correction and of course, precise design and manufacturing. Biological lifeforms are mostly meant to live in noisy and hostile environments (but still heavily adapted to their environments).
