community project

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-16 16:47

Why don't we have a /prog/ community project? Or is there already one in progress? If so, it should be more obvious that there is one going on. I don't visit the irc channel if there is one.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-16 16:50

We have one.  It's called ANONIX.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-16 16:52

Oh, by the way, what would be a good project?

I'm thinking some kind of simple text-based game. Graphics are for faggots.

Personally, I really like 3d mazes(I'm not talking about a 2d maze with 3d graphics, I mean a maze that is actually 3d)

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-16 17:03

#!/usr/bin/perl
do {
    print "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.\n";
    print "Obvious exits are north, south, east, west, up, and down.\n";
    print "> ";
} while <>;

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-16 17:08

I'd be interested to hear from someone who has actually created a 3d maze. It seems very interesting.

I've seen a visual representation of a 4d maze on some website and I couldn't begin to understand what the fuck I was looking at.

It also has a 3D mode.

Voxels support for Classic DooM!!!!!

3D maze
Oh, like the Water Temple?

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-16 18:33

Fuck, its been over 10 years since I beat that Godforsaken temple. I forget what it was like.

Is it complex or just tedious?

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-16 19:29

>>9
Both. Running around in circles from room to room and level to flip the various switches all the while enduring that delay you get when you change rooms.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-16 20:25

>>10
Okay. I wont play it again, then. Switch puzzles kind of suck imo.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-16 21:01

I have an idea, lets play the adventure game in emacs, just to get ideas for any adventure game that this board would make.
tools>games>adventure

ok, I take the shovel, I dig, nothing there, where do I go now?

Maybe we should make a /prog/ git repository for projects and shit.

I would vote for some kind of RPG, with wizzards, plan9 dragons, cdrs, the wizzard book and other items and other kinds of shit.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 14:07

Don't we have a dropbox or similar account too?

You offer the Parentheses to Sussman...
An invisible choir sings, and you are bathed in radiance...
The voice of Sussman booms out: "Congratulations, mortal!"
"In return to thy service, I grant thee the gift of Satori!"
You ascend to the status of Wizard...

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 15:33

im opposed to an rpg because that has been overdone to shit and considering the amount of rpgs that exist it is unlikely we will be able to fashion together anything 'fresh'

rather, we should attempt to do something original so that we at least produce something interesting

that said, with some effort, we could probably create an innovative rpg but i have issues with the traditional leveling system which seems to promote grinding rather than enhance gameplay

Levels suck. I would rather say we use XP and Items.
With XP one could buy "skills" and "get rid of them, so one could customize his own character by playing but still not restricting it and Items would provide bonuses for players and could be used for trade.

Anyone played "dark messiha of might and magic"? Its a pretty cool game, would think something in that direction.
I imagine a /prog/(ramming) and medival + magic themed RPG would be pretty cool.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 16:47

what if it was an online game?

we'd need to work some network magicks, but it would promote a kind of community that would encourage development if players could interact

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 16:48

how about a secure distributed internet platform for chatting, filesharing, LEAKING SECURE DOCS, photo publishing, etc

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 17:03

>>24
>secure
no such thing
there are already many avenues for filesharing that work better than what we'd come up with

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 17:30

Let's do it in Erlang.

A bit complex dont you think?
I dont think /prog/(or World4ch) would have much use for this.

I think most would enjoy a RPG alot more.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 17:56

What about a procedurally-generated RPG? You could go on a myriad unique quests generated from a few generic RPG quest lines.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 18:15

How about we start a business and make millions of $$$

Done and done in Erlang.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 18:37

what the fuck is so great about erlang

I believe a good community project would be to restore quality in this BBS board system. However, the odds of this succeeding are slim.

What do you suggest? What is wrong with it? It's probably manageable.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 20:37

Why don't we make a simple, extensible game? A minimalist engine with Lua scripting or something. Text-based or curses, unless any of us are sadomasochistic enough to use Allegro or even SDL.
This way most of us can participate, as I know we all have different programming capabilities.

Name: Anonymous 2010-12-17 20:40
