what is a line editor?

Name: Anonymous 2010-11-21 21:00

Ive asked a lot of people this question and have never get a straight answer. If you do a web search you will see the same bullshit definition over and over, that it is an editor that only edited one line at a time before the advent of monitors. So can someone tell me exactly what you are physically looking at when using a line editor? If there is no screen what is the text being displayed on?

Why don't you just try one out and see?

Exactly.
Quit whining, OP, and go mess around with one instead.
WTF?? did you see the wikipedia definition I posted? here it is again:
a computer operator typically interacted with a teletype (essentially a printer with a keyboard), with no video display
a TELETYPE, did you get that?? where the fuck do I find a teletype to try a line editor? And ed is just a program that runs on a line editor. Admittedly I dont know exactly what Im talking about here because no one has given me an exact definition yet of what a line editor is
