libcrypt on ARM5

I'm trying to compile libcrypt on a SheevaPlug running Debian Squeeze, but it keeps giving me the following error:

invalid operands to binary != (have ‘va_list’ and ‘void *’)

is there any way to get this thing to compile without major hacking?

I haven't written much of anything in C yet, but from what I've seen and done I like it a lot better than Java (language I started on in CS courses).  Python's also winning me over - not only can it do awesome things with AJAX, Qt, and Gtk, it can do them really quickly.  Of course, now Synchronet itself is making gcc cry, but with iBBS up and running that's not a big deal for me.
